Hendrik Vermeulen’s couture collection draws its inspiration from the unexpected beauty of insects. The collection underlines the unique characteristics of insects – specifically their body morphological uniqueness – and directs the attention to the mesmerizing beauty found in these initially unpleasant or angst-inducing creatures.
Looking at them through a macro lens reveals the unique anatomical structure of an insect’s body, organised into segments of three distinctive, yet interconnecting units: The head, the thorax and the abdomen.
Taking this into consideration, the collection draws a strong emphasis on cinched waists and exaggeratedly round hips to mimic this shape. We achieve this effect through different methods, such as strategic design (negative space), manipulation and placement of each custom designed print and construction.
